The Leukocyte- Increasing Effect of the Water Soluble Extracts Prepared from the Various Tissues of the Rabbits Administered with Typhoid Vaccine

Abstract
The author tested, using rabbits, the leukocyte-increasing effect of the water soluble extracts pre
pared from the tissues of the liver, spleen, kidney and bone marrow which were taken from normal
rabbits and the rabbits intravenously injected with I ml of typhoid vaccine per kg body weight. The
results thus obtained were discussed and arrived at the following conclusions:
1. All the extracts prepared from the tissues of normal rabbits and those injected with typhoid vaccine had an effect to produce leukocytosis characterized by pseudoeosinophilia.
2. The leukocyte-increasing effect of the extracts prepared from the tissues of the rabbits at 3 or 24 hours following the injection of typhoid vaccine were almost equal to that of the extracts prepared from the same tissues of normal rabbits, whereas that of the extracts prepared from the same tissues of the rabbits at 5 or 7 hours following the injection of typhoid vaccine were more marked than that of the former.
3. The leukocyte-increasing effect of the extracts of the liver and splenic tissue of normal rabbits and those injected with typhoid vaccine were more marked than that of the extracts prepared from the renal and bone marrow tissues of such rabbits. There was, however, no difference in the leukocyte-increasing effect between the liver and the spleen extracts and between the Iidney and the bone marrow extracts.
4. On the basis of the above it is presumed that the leukocyte-increasing factor demonstrated in the circulating blood by many investigators seems to be derived not from one particular organ, but chiefly from the liver and spleen and also other organs including the kidney and bone marrow.
